Bangalore Dermatological Society Down the
Years: It
was in 1991, that like minded dermatologists in Bangalore decided to have a clinical
society to promote active academic & social interaction amongst them.
In July 92, One Sunday evening
Dr. D.A.Satish & Dr. K.Srinivasa
Murthy sat down & worked out the mode of formation of the clinical
society over a cup of tea & rava-iddly at Dr.Satish's house. This was done after consulting the
active force of Bangalore,
Dr.Lakshman Rao. Then Dr.Satish shot off a letter to all the dermatologists
in Bangalore
and called a meeting at IMA hall, Alur Venkata Rao road and thus was
born the Bangalore Dermatological society on 2th
July 1992.
The following proposals were suggested & accepted by members -
1. Society will not be related to IADVL.
2. Society to have monthly meetings throughout the year except during the
month of IADVL conferences.
3. Meeting to be held on 3rd Saturday of every month at 2.30 pm.
4. Meeting could be hosted by any individual or institution with scientific
programmes like case presentations, lectures,
paper presentations, panel discussion etc,
5. Dr.Srinivasa Murthy was unanimously appointed as
co-ordinator of the society for 92-93 & It
was decided not to have any other office bearers at that moment.
6. There would be no annual subscriptions, a nominal fee of Rs10/-, to be
collected from every member attending the meeting for stationary & postage.
Twenty nine dermatologists attended this meeting, followed by high
tea sponsored by Croslands. That was the first
official meet of BDS. It was followed by 1st Clinical meet at St.John's Medical
College Hospital
on 22.8.92, hosted by Dr.Rajendran. In was well
attended by 40 dermatologists. From then we never looked back. That year
altogether we had 4 meetings, with MSRMTH, Manipal
hospital & BMC hosting the other meetings.
- In 1993, we had 9 meetings
including a dinner meet at Windsor Manor hosted by Dr.D.A.Satish.
- In 94 we had 8 meetings
including a general body meeting. This GBM was held for improving the
functioning of BDS. Several new proposals were suggested &
accepted. To collect annual membership fee of Rs100/- & Dr.Srinivasa Murthy to continue as co-ordinator of BDS for next few years. Co-ordinator was asked to open a SB A/c in the name
of Bangalore Dermatological Society. It was also decided to have
annual social get together for members & their family. It was also
decided to have prizes for papers presented.
- In 95, we had 7 meetings
and.
- In 96 we had 7 including
the first annual social get together at Estate Club..
- In 97 we had 7 meetings
including lectures by Dr.(Mrs)S.Wilkinson & Dr.J.Wilkinson
who spoke on Cosmetic & hand dermatitis at Taj
West End Hotel in Jan 97. Same year Dr.Nagabhushana
conducted CME programme on Therapeutics at
MSRMTH. Our Annual Social get-together was held at Best Club.
We conducted 7 meetings in 98 including the annual meet at Dominion
Club. Dr.Rajendran conducted dermato-surgical
lectures with demonstrations at SJMCH with Dr.Bruce
McGeorge in 98. We had 5 meetings in 99,
including the annual meet at Micro lab farm house,
& a guest lecture by Dr.Rino Cerio on Psoriasis during Feb 99. Prizes
for best paper presentation in different category (Consultant-Private,
Consultant-Institution, Post-Graduates) was initiated to encourage
members to present in large numbers. Since 99, it was also decided to have
journal club reading at all the meetings.
Landmarks:
- BDS established on 25.7.92
- In 93 Dr.Satish
began publishing the BDS Bulletin, which was a quarterly issue.
- In 96 we had our first
annual social get together.
- In 96 BDS, with ADSI
jointly hosted the Conference of Association of Dermatologic Surgeons
of India at Bangalore
at KIMS hospital where live surgery for vitiligo was demonstrated.
- In Feb 98, at Command Hospital we had our GBM &
BDS became a elected body with Dr.SDN Gupta becoming the President, Dr.Satish Bhonsle-Vice-President,
Dr.K.Srinivasa Murthy-Secretary cum Treasurer,
Dr.Nagaraja-Joint-Secretary. Executive
members elected were: Dr.Rajendran, Dr.Nagabhushana, Dr.Col
Dash, Dr.M.G.Gopal, Dr.Premalatha,
Dr.Parvathy, Dr.D.A.Satish,
Dr.Maya Phillip, Dr.Krupashankar.
- Dr.D.A.Satish to continue as editor of
BDS-Bulletin.
- BDS was Registered on
27.8.98
- During March 99, Dr.Rajendran conducted a
International workshop on Pigmentation & Pigmentary
disorders at SJMCH.
- In 2000, all the members unitedly hosted the 28th National Conference of
IADVL at Hotel Ashok, Bangalore which was a big success in
every way.
Social Works: In March 99, almost 40 BDS
members took part in a skin camp along with Rotary, at central prison to
detect & treat Skin & Sexually transmitted diseases.
